Blood Orange Old Fashioned

28 February 2025 Gluten Free Vegetarian Friendly
Celebrating citrus season with a cocktail and the perfect riff on my favourite tipple, which just so happens to pair beautifully with a little blood orange in the mix.

I know I tickled your tastebuds last week with the Old Fashioned Chicken made with all these flavours, so it only seemed right to also share the recipe for the original inspiration behind my main course crowd pleaser. Because, quite frankly, roast chicken is as much of a staple in your repertoire as a basic cocktail.

An Old Fashioned is far from basic in flavour and gravitas in the mixology world, but it is simple to make and is guaranteed to score you points with your friends. I have written about cocktail hour here and it beautifully punctuates a day and ode to my Grandmother. Selma taught me everything about how a chilled vodka at 6pm is sacrosanct and the importance of a dip/snack to go alongside.

Today it’s all about the drink (not the snack) and literally shaking up your cocktail repertoire while keeping it perfectly seasonal.  I’ve made a few changes here that may cause a shudder down a mixologists spine, but makes this Old Fashioned laced with blood orange and maple syrup a simple kitchen friendly evening treat.

A few notes on this cocktail:

Instead of sugar syrup, which despite best intentions I am pretty sure most of us don’t have to hand, I use maple syrup, a fridge staple.

I also squeezed the blood orange into the mix because I love the flavour and colour, but it makes it a little cloudy (some purists may object).

If you can find orange bitters, they really do make this drink sing.

A cocktail shaker is preferred here but not necessary and it shouldn’t prevent you from mixing this drink and enjoying it to your hearts content.  Ice is essential.

Most importantly, have fun with this and toast the humble citrus.
